Suspect Caught on Camera Assaults Store Manager
– July 2, 2025
A routine evening at the Dollar Tree near North Oak Trafficway and Barry Road turned violent Tuesday night when an unidentified man assaulted a store manager and fled with stolen merchandise.
According to eyewitness accounts and security footage, the suspect entered the store around closing time and became confrontational when approached by staff. The situation escalated quickly into a physical altercation, during which the store manager was assaulted. The suspect then fled the store with undisclosed items.
Surveillance images shared by store employees show the suspect wearing a black t-shirt emblazoned with the words “JALEN LEWIS Basketball” beneath a graphic of a basketball. He was also wearing gray sweatpants, multi-colored athletic shoes, and a distinctive head wrap or knit cap. A visible tattoo is present on his left forearm.
In an effort to identify the individual, concerned employees contacted the basketball coach named on the shirt, but the coach confirmed he has no connection to the suspect and did not recognize him.
The incident has prompted strong concern from the local community, particularly given the violent nature of the confrontation. The store’s management team has since filed a report with the Kansas City Police Department, and a formal investigation is underway.
“This kind of thing is unacceptable. Our manager was just doing their job—trying to close the store safely for the night—and got hurt instead,” said one employee who asked to remain anonymous.
The suspect remains at large. Anyone who recognizes the individual in the surveillance photos is urged to contact the Kansas City Police Department or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at (816) 474-TIPS.
“We’re hoping someone in the community will recognize him,” said a family member of the assaulted employee. “We just want to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
