Redevelopment for the Old Kmart Site on Vivion Road

In the heart of Northland Kansas City, urban renewal and community revitalization is taking shape, by the efforts of Northland Neighborhoods Inc. in collaboration with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA). The abandoned Kmart site on Vivion Road, a vestige of retail's bygone era, is poised to undergo a transformation. The proponents of the development plan aim to breathe new life into the community and alter the local landscape significantly.

The collaboration between Northland Neighborhoods Inc. and KCATA is not merely a redevelopment project but what they claim is a vision for the future, aptly titled "Changing the View." This initiative seeks to turn the deserted retail space into a vibrant, multi-use complex that could include housing, retail, and community spaces. The goal is to create an environment that fosters social interaction, economic growth, and enhanced quality of life for the residents of North Kansas City.

The KCATA and NNI have invited developers and architects to contribute concept proposals to the project. The criteria for submission emphasize sustainable design, community integration, and economic viability, underscoring the project's commitment to not just redevelopment, but the rejuvenation of the urban fabric.

This project comes on the heels of the successful redevelopment of the old Antioch Mall, located directly across from the abandoned Kmart. The mall's transformation into a thriving mixed-use space has set a precedent for what can be achieved through community-focused urban renewal efforts. The Antioch Mall's success story has become a source of inspiration for the Vivion Road project, bolstering confidence among stakeholders and the community alike that the redevelopment can serve as another cornerstone of North Kansas City's ongoing revitalization.

The Mayor has appointed Deb Herman to the board ok KCATA in 2025. Thinking conflicts of interests in so many different levels. it’s agreous, tricky, No transparency from NNI Who lost 75 000 from clay county commissioners due to no records as to their expenditures. Money from KC MO district 1-2 already gives 150,000 each from these districts budget. NNI already is involved now with a title KCATA board member 2025. Is this a paid position or another way to give the NNI MORE GRANT MONEY ITS BUDGET IS MADE FROM BLOCK GRANTS, TIFF MONEY, UNITED WAY GREATER KCMO ( most of this money is part of Kansas City Employees who donate every paycheck minus taxes. The United Way of Greater Kansas City collected about 400,000. Total United Way is around 15-20 million
