Hayes Hamburgers: A Slice of Nostalgia Struggling to Stay Open


Kansas City, MO — For nearly 70 years, Hayes Hamburgers at Antioch and Vivion Rd has been a blast of Kansas City past, serving up crisp burgers and nostalgia in equal measure, right down to it's refusal to get with the times and accept Plastic, operating as a cash-only business.  Opened in 1955, this classic diner was once a beacon for late-night cravings, its neon sign glowing 24/7 over bustling counters and sizzling grills. 

But the era of round-the-clock service is now a fond memory, as the beloved eatery struggles to stay afloat amidst staffing shortages and an uncertain future. Like many small businesses, Hayes was hit hard by the pandemic. Once renowned for its reliability, the diner’s hours have become erratic. With only three employees on staff, day shifts are a scramble, and the once-vital overnight hours have been abandoned altogether. Despite this it is still a bargain, their sliders are only $2.10. 

Regulars are often greeted by locked doors and handwritten signs announcing temporary closures, sometimes stretching for days. They were closed for a week last spring and for a week last fall allegedly for maintenance. It has been forced to reduce hours  6am to 4pm Monday thru Friday, and 7am to 4pm Saturdays. They are not currently open on Sundays or nights. They hope that will change with additional staffing, 

An Aging Legacy

Part of Hayes’ charm has always been its old-school vibe—a no-frills diner where the focus is on great food and friendly service. But the challenges of running a small, labor-intensive operation are taking their toll. The owner, now 81 years old, can no longer take a hands-on approach to running the business. He reportedly intends to keep the restaurant until he dies but his step-children, who have tried to support him from the sidelines, have reportedly considered a buyer in the last year to keep the family legacy alive. 

“This place has been a second home for so many people,” says longtime customer Tim Wilson, who has been dining at Hayes since the 1970s. “It’s heartbreaking to see it like this. We don’t want to lose it.”

A Struggle to Staff the Grill

The labor shortage has hit Hayes particularly hard. As a small business, it can’t compete with the wages and benefits offered by larger chains. Finding night-shift workers, a cornerstone of the diner’s once-iconic 24-hour schedule, has proven nearly impossible.

“It’s not that we don’t want to stay open,” says one employee, “There’s just no one to work. The owner is doing what he can, but it’s not enough.”

Despite the challenges, Hayes still holds a special place in the hearts of many Kansas Citians. Its burgers, cooked to perfection on a well-seasoned grill, have stood the test of time. The diner’s walls, lined with vintage photos and memorabilia, tell the story of a neighborhood institution that has weathered decades of change.

For now, the future of Hayes Hamburgers is uncertain. Whether it will find a buyer to carry on its legacy or be forced to close its doors for good remains to be seen. In the meantime, the community can show its support by stopping in during the diner’s sporadic open hours and sharing memories of this beloved local gem.

HAYES HAMBURGERS IS NOT CLOSING!!!
As an employee at Hayes for 32 years, and the last 20 years of that as the manager, I have to say that running our restaurant is Much more difficult than pre-Pandemic, but not just a lack of employee's, shortages of supplies, small business owners that we purchased product from for years closing, repair and maintenance people that know how to work on 50 year old equipment retiring,
just to name a few things. But there has never been a moment when anyone (including the owner) has ever considered selling it. Also before publishing something of this sort you should verify your information.... HAYES IS NOT FOR SALE and THE OWNER DOES NOT HAVE ANY CHILDREN. So saying they exist, have tried to helped, and want to sell it is not just incorrect, it is insulting to the people who HAVE given up so much to keep it running through this. The 2 women that have work(ed) with me for years have done more to help me keep (Hayes) open than any employee should ever do... and I thank them for it every chance I can. In the end WE are as close to his "children" as anyone in this world and will keep the doors open as much as we can for as far as I can see into the future.

Hayes is a landmark & must stay open forever. We all have loved eating there for years. We also enjoy the people there, visiting back & forth and in great mood while eating those delicious burgers.

We moved a couple of blocks north of Hayes in 1956, and have been a pretty steady customer since. A lot of good memories of meeting up with my truck driver Dad early in the morning when he was coming home after a run and I was getting off from the KC Star.

Golly, we lost Harold’s at the beginning of the year, 2025 is not shaping up very well for those of us who love us a great little diner. . .

My sweet Daddy, Mac McCreedy was good friends of the Hayes fsmily...my brother.,RC, was a dear friend of Joe Hayes. I treasure my childhood memories of getting to go to Hayes Hamburgers after my Mom finished her grocery shopping on Saturday afternoon. They aroma of the hamburgers is something that brings memories of happier times, of families on a budget treating their families. I hope this memorable icon can stay open. God Bless

this article needs to be removed or corrected because it is NOT accurate. Hayes has NOT been closed for days or weeks on end other than 1 week each spring and fall for maintenance, as has been their practice for decades. it is open 6am to 4pm Monday thru Friday, and 7am to 4pm Saturdays. they are not currently open Sundays or nights. with additional staffing, that may change. unless the author has information direct from the owner or a buyer, he should not be publishing unsubstantiated rumors about the restaurant being sold.

He can't compete with other restaurants on wages? Hmmm... that might be why he can't get any help and stay open. Pay competitive wages -- and, yes, that will come with increased prices -- and perhaps that'd help attract workers.

Hopefully they survive long enough for Trump to straighten the messes up, it’s been hard on small business with this administration and entitled workforce.
