In a shocking turn of events that apparently surprised everyone except the people who live there, one Northland man is dead and another is now enjoying the amenities of the Clay County Detention Center after neighbors say years of harassment and bullying finally escalated into shots being fired Monday morning.
Authorities say Jeffery King has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death of Chris Wells along NE 78th Street in the Maple Wood Estates neighborhood of Gladstone.
Residents report a long-running pattern of disputes and intimidation by King that, despite being widely known, somehow never quite rose to the level of “this might end badly” for anyone in a position to intervene. That calculation changed Monday morning when the ongoing neighborhood drama concluded not with mediation or a strongly worded HOA email, but with gunfire.
Police say the investigation is ongoing. Neighbors, meanwhile, are left wondering how a situation described as “years in the making” managed to catch everyone so completely off guard.
